what was the mystical water protection that Africans thought they had when they fought the Europeans?

During the imperialist era, Europeans fought for control of land in Africa. Some Africans believed that they had nothing to worry about because they had a mystical water shield of some sort. They ended up being slaughtered because their "water shield" didn't actually work. Does anyone know any more about this, or what they called their heavenly protection?

1. I majored in History in college; and I've never heard of a "water shield". Since it evidently didn't work, what difference does it make? If you are genuinely interested in such things, look up the "boxers" in old Imperial China: they suffered from the same kind of delusion. Alberich
2. It was probably a tribe from the Congo region, though I wouldn't bet my life on it.
