  1. You can buy them many places: online, at some book stores and at New Age shops. Just look around. There are many types (usually that just means what images exactly are on them). Some people think they are "evil" either because they erroneously equate them with witchcraft or they think that trying to see the future (another erroneous claim) is wrong and even "un-godly". In truth, they are not evil. Tarot cards are only to be used to show you what /might/ happen in your future, not what /will/. There are many theories as to how they work. Some say it's just the human mind/subconscious at work, some say it's gods, some say spirits. Some just say that are fake. It's up to you to decide what it is that you think makes them work. Reading them is something you have to learn. Once you learn their basic meanings (there are many books on this), you can learn to look at them individually and as a "story" of sorts. Sorry, I'm in a bit of a time crunch. I hope that helped you a little! xx
  2. You can purchase them at any Borders, or Barnes and Nobles, or bookstores. Tarot cards are often used for fortune telling, which is condemned in the Bible. That's probably why she considers them evil. How they work is debatable, but you can find instructions on reading them in any pack of cards you buy, or on the internet. You can read the same things from normal playing cards though.
  3. They sell them all over, from the internet to book stores. If your mom is not comfortable with them and you're a minor, you should respect her feelings, though. They'll be around. If you're an adult, then it's your call. There is a lot of debate on how they work. Some people believe the cards have inherent powers of their own. Some think they are like a tool that helps you "plug in" to the collective unconscious or the Akashic records. Some think studying the symbols are a way of communing with your spirit guides, or your higher self and tapping into your natural intuitive abilities in your subconscious. You would have to study to learn how to read them; that would be too complex for a short answer.
  4. Your mom thinks they're evil because that's the church's standard line for all things of that sort. They say the same thing about palm reading and reading your horoscope. Cards can be purchased at many bookstores, and metaphysical stores. Most decks have a small booklet that explains some very simple layouts and interpretations of the cards. As you gain more expertise, the meanings of some of the cards may become personal. There are also books on the Tarot that go into more detail than the booklets.
  5. tarot cards should be given to you and they should be passed on through the generations they should never be given away or burned. Christians think that they are evil because they only believe in one god not many gods/goddesses. the cards will read you as you shuffle some cards will fall read those, their meaning may not be immediately apparent but it will make sense to you over time, make sure you get a book with it to get you started and the type of spread you can use for certain information. email me if you want any more info.
  6. Tarot cards were created in mid 15th century Italy for the Milanese court. They were formed by taking the existing Latin suited played cards and adding a fifth suit of picture cards. These cards took as their theme, not an occult philosophy or magical symbols but a Christian triumph procession. Hence their early name of trionfi, meaning triumphs and from which we get our word trump - and it was the invention of tarot that marked the invention of trumps in card games. And that is what they were invented for, games. For 350 years, they were used for nothing other than games and these are still played today throughout continental Europe! Some of the cards do look a little strange to us today, perhaps suspect, giving credence to the occult view of them. However, we must remember that we are looking at them through modern eyes, if we examine the art of the time and place of their creation, we get another picture. Let's take a couple of examples: The Female Pope (re-named High Priestess by occultists) not only looks strange to us but positively heretical! However, in 15th century Italian art this was quite a common figure, used by Christian artists to symbolize such things as The New Covenant and the virtue of Faith. Another is The Hanged Man, named by the French card makers who were as puzzled by the figure of a man suspended by one foot as we are today. Certainly the occultists have give many imaginative accounts but we know from written sources that in Italy this card was known as The Traitor - because that is how they executed traitors, hanging them by one foot and leaving them to die rather slowly and publicly. No mystery at all. Contrary to popular myth, the Church never objected to tarot cards, if it had, then how, in a time when a whisper heresy could get you killed, could the cards have spread through most of Europe to become at one time the most popular form of card game there?! It was not until the late 18th century that a Parisian occultist, Antoine Court de Gebelin, discovered the cards and, ignorant of their true origin, invented a Fairy Story about the cards comming from Ancient Egypt and its use for fortune telling. For about 100 years these notions were limited to France but in the late 19th century some British occultists imported them to the English speaking world where many new fairy stories have been added to their mythology. Without an occult origin, fortune telling with tarot cards is no different in kind to using tea leaves, dominoes, or knuckle bones. I can't take those very seriously myself. However, there are also objections from both science and philosophy, as the idea of future knowledge runs into the same logical objections and paradoxes as time travel. You will have to make up your own mind. As for purchasing the cards: In the US: http://www.tarobearslair.com imports many of the cards use for the games in Europe and some for fortune telling. In Europe: http://www.playingcardsales.com and http://www.alidastore.com
